Methodology
Based on the Population Reference Bureau's estimate (Carl Haub, updated with Toshiko Kaneda, 2022) that about 117 billion members of Homo sapiens have ever been born since roughly 190,000 BCE. The estimate combines assumptions about how long humans have existed, average population sizes in each era, and birth rates. With about 8 billion alive today, the living are roughly 7% of the total.
What this does not show
This is a demographic model, not a census. It depends on uncertain assumptions about how long humans have existed, ancient population sizes and prehistoric birth rates, so the total is a rough order-of-magnitude estimate. Figures are rounded.
