Verified dataHow you'll spend a 79-year life
If a whole life of 79 years followed the average American's day, this is roughly how the years add up — nearly a third of it asleep, and more than half sleeping or working.

Average hours per day by activity
Accessed Aug 22, 2026
Average hours/day, all persons 15+, 2023; applied to a 79-year life.
Methodology
Average hours per day spent on each activity by all Americans aged 15 and over, from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' American Time Use Survey (2023), applied across a 79-year life (years = hours per day ÷ 24 × 79). “The rest” groups eating, grooming, caring for others, shopping, commuting and other smaller activities.
What this does not show
This applies the average adult day to a whole 79-year life, which is a simplification — childhood and old age differ, and individuals vary widely. Figures are population averages (all persons 15+), so, for example, “working” is diluted by people who are retired or not employed. Years are rounded.
