From 2007 to 2021 the United States added 19 terawatt-hours of annual electricity demand — half a percent in fourteen years. Since 2021 it has added 343, more than Britain uses in a year.

American electricity demand stopped growing for a decade and a half and has now restarted. Between 2007 and 2021 total demand rose from 4,174 to 4,193 terawatt-hours — nineteen terawatt-hours, half a percent, across fourteen years, as efficiency gains cancelled out a growing population and economy. Since 2021 demand has risen by 343 TWh to 4,536, the highest figure on record. That four-year increase is larger than the entire annual electricity consumption of the United Kingdom.

Measured annual electricity demand in terawatt-hours, compiled by Ember from national and international statistics. Comparison figures for the United Kingdom and Italy are from the same series; the pre-2000 record check uses Ember's electricity generation series back to 1985.
Methodology
The chart plots each year's total electricity demand as the difference from 2007, the first year of the flat period. Framing it as a change rather than a level means the zero line is a real zero — the 2007 level of 4,174 TWh — so no part of the axis is cut off, which a chart of the absolute level would have required to make the inflection visible at all. The area is filled from that zero line, so the fourteen flat years read as a sliver and the recent rise as a wedge. Figures are annual national totals from Ember, which compiles measured electricity statistics from national and international sources; they are not forecasts. The comparison bars set the four-year American increase against the full-year electricity demand of the United Kingdom and Italy in 2025.
What this does not show
The data shows that demand turned upward; it does not show why. Data centres are the most frequently cited driver, but electric vehicles, heat pumps, reshored manufacturing and hotter summers all add load, and this series does not separate them — any single-cause reading goes beyond what is plotted here. The demand series begins in 2000, so the claim that 2025 is the highest on record rests on separate generation data reaching back to 1985, which confirms no earlier year was higher. Annual totals hide the seasonal and hourly peaks that actually strain a grid. The 2001 and 2009 troughs are recessions, not efficiency gains, and the most recent year may be revised as national statistics are finalised.
