Federal Debt Held by the Public as Percent of GDP (FYPUGDA188S)
Accessed Aug 14, 2026
Annual fiscal-year values; underlying data from OMB and the U.S. Treasury.
Methodology
Federal debt held by the public expressed as a percentage of gross domestic product, annual fiscal-year values from 1939 to 2025. Data are from the U.S. Office of Management and Budget and the U.S. Treasury, retrieved via FRED (series FYPUGDA188S).
What this does not show
This is debt held by the public relative to GDP — a ratio, not a dollar amount. It excludes intragovernmental debt (money the federal government owes itself, such as the Social Security trust funds), so it is lower than 'gross' or 'total' federal debt. A rising ratio can reflect more borrowing, slower GDP growth, or both.
